TRAFFIC PERFORMANCE DURING APRIL TO MARCH, 2018
The total traffic handled at Major Ports during April to March, 2018 was 679.36 Million Tonnes as against 648.40 Million Tonnes handled during the corresponding period of previous year. The overall growth of the traffic handled was 4.77%.
Nine Ports (Kolkata(incl. Haldia), Paradip, Visakhapatnam, Kamarajar, Chennai, Cochin, New Mangalore, JNPT and Kandla registered positive growth in traffic.
Whereas traffic was declined in three Ports viz. V.O. Chidambaranar, Mormugao and Mumbai as compared to the corresponding period of last year.
The highest growth was registered by Cochin Port (16.52%), followed by Paradip (14.68%), Kolkata [incl. Haldia] (13.61%), JNPT (6.20%) and New Mangalore (5.28%).
Cochin Port growth was mainly due to increase in traffic of Fin. Fertilizer (105.88%), POL (20.62%), Containers (12.46%) and Other Misc. cargo (0.75%). There was decrease in traffic of Fertilizer Raw Materials (-20.00%) and Other Liquids (-10.68%).
Mormugao Port registered the highest decline in traffic i.e. -18.94%, followed by V.O. Chidambaranar Port by -4.91% and Mumbai by -0.35%.
Decline in Mormugao Port traffic was due to reduction in Iron Ore by -31.85%, Other Misc. Cargo by -21.17%, Thermal & Steam Coal by -20.49% and Finished Fertilizers by -8.54%.
V.O. Chidambaranar Port traffic declined due to reduction in Fin. Fertilizers by -46.19%, Coking & Other Coal by -21.63%, Other Misc. Cargo by -12.87%, Thermal & Steam Coal by -9.51%, POL by -4.20% and Other Liquids by -1.02%.
Decline in Mumbai Port traffic was due to reduction in Coking Coal & Other Coal by -15.35%, Fin. Fertilizer by -12.11%, Other Liquid by -9.44%, Other Misc. Cargo by -6.00% and Container by -0.36%.
In Kolkata Port, overall growth was 13.61%. Kolkata Dock System(KDS) registered traffic growth of 3.45%, whereas Haldia Dock Complex(HDC) registered a growth of 18.61%, which is highest among all the Major Ports.
During the period April to March, 2018, Kandla Port handled the highest volume of traffic i.e. 110.10 Million Tonnes (16.21% share), followed by Paradip with 102.01 Million Tonnes (15.02% share), JNPT with 66.00 Million Tonnes (9.72% share), Visakhapatnam with 63.54 Million Tonnes (9.35% share) and Mumbai with 62.83 Million Tonnes (9.25% share). Together, these five Ports handled around 60% of Major Ports Traffic.
Commodity-wise percentage share of POL was maximum i.e. 31.55%, followed by Container (19.67%), Thermal & Steam Coal (14.02%), Other Misc. Cargo (13.62%), Coking & Other Coal (7.45%), Iron Ore & Pellets (7.15%), Other Liquids (4.33%), Finished Fertilizer and FRM both (1.11%).
Decline was witnessed only in Iron Ore traffic (-2.75%). All other commodities registered positive traffic growth; Coking & Other Coal (8.62%), Containers (7.26%), POL and FRM both (7.22%), Finished Fertilizers (6.78%), Other Liquids (4.33%), Thermal & Steam Coal (2.77%) and Other Misc. cargo (0.08%)
